The political refugee Georg (Franz Rogowski) escapes arrest in Paris. By chance, he gets hold of the identity papers of the writer Weidel, who committed suicide, adopts his identity and flees to Marseille.
There he meets Marie Weidel (Paula Beer) and falls in love with the mysterious woman who is looking for her missing husband - a writer - to emigrate with him to South America.
Shortly before the departure of the ship, Georg has to decide whether he should tell Marie the truth in order to board with her instead of her husband.
